The Blastwave

The blastwave.

The forest sang under the breaking dawn as morning dew ripped from the emerald blades of grass that swayed slightly in the wind. Daunting trees stared down at the forest below; the slanted banks of the mountains looked ever bigger when looking up from the tranquil valley below. Verdant brush lined the forest floor but contrasting the heavy green backdrop were beautiful sparks of colour. A scarlet humming bird fluttered over the canopy and through the rays of golden sunlight shining through the leaves; it reflected off the crimson liquid that dripped from its tiny wings.

Over the horizon, as the sun finally broke into the valley and allowed the full beauty of its light to burst between the mountains; the world fell silent. A bright flash at the end of the valley, a boom that echoed as it bounced between the trees across the vale and shook them with utter destructive force; the water that rested on the leaves above tumbled to the verdant grass below and bounced across the soil. A wave of soil, dust, water and fire ripped through the valley following the explosive shockwave; it burnt through the brush and tore the daunting trees from their roots as the shockwave flung them across the valley, bouncing the banks of the mountains. The trees that stood strong against the blast leaned back as if they were being pulled back by the fingers of destruction.

After mere moments of the torturous devastation, everything became silent. Then, the shockwave was ripped back towards the epicentre, snatching more trees – that simply were not strong enough – back through the valley.  The hellish fire stretched up into the ashen sky, small rings of smoke surrounding its burning trunk, the flaming heat formed a mushroom cloud that brushed the now mahogany skies.

The welcoming, beautiful valley was but in the past. There was not a shade pf green, no golden rays of sunlight and not a single chirp from the birds above. Fire, ash and brimstone remained, a filter of muddy brown and ashen grey hid the beauty of colour away. Above; the sapphire sky hid behind a blanket cloud. Fires continued to burn around one last tree, slowly spreading up its trunk, as it stood against the elements. Radiation slipped into the valley. Soon; the last tree fell, and the world fell silent, except for the crackling of orange flames.
